Title
Medieval Steelyard Weight
Description
English: A complete lead spheroidal lead weight encased in copper alloy. Medieval (c. AD 1150 - c. AD 1500). Length: 54.2mm; maximum diameter: 44.7mm. Weight: c. 471g.

The spheroidal weight has a rounded bottom and is slightly more pointed at the top than at the bottom. At the apex there is a separate cast copper alloy collared suspension loop that has been soldered to the main part. One side of the loop has a depression which appears to be a casting flaw. There is a small deposit of iron staining around the collar and loop. Two sub-circular holes on the side of the weight may have been used for pouring in the molten lead. One of the holes, the smaller of the two, is filled with lead. The other hole appears to have a copper alloy plug which has a rough surface, in contrast to the overall smooth finish of the outer casing.

The surface has a light to mid-green patina.
