Title
Medieval Strap-end
Description
English: Incomplete Medieval (1350 - 1450) copper alloy strap-end consisting of damaged socket, waist and damaged “lyre-shaped” openwork main part. It measures an incomplete 48.46x27.60mm, is max.6.03mm thick and weighs 16.1g.

On the front of the socket is asymmetrical decoration, possibly three leaves, within a rectangular frame flanking the edges of the socket. The open end is damaged just beyond the two (corroded remains of) iron rivets in each corner, also visible on the reverse, which is otherwise plain. The socket is 22.38mm wide at the damaged open end, narrowing to 21.74mm above the waist.

At the centre of the “lyre” element is the figure of St Christopher with staff and holding the Boy Jesus on his shoulders, between two apertures. His feet are missing and his head is next to the waist (which 17.80mm wide). Incomplete moulded roundels flank the sides, which survive as short stumps only. These three elements extend from a platform 24.86mm wide beyond the waist. The reverse of the strap end is plain.
