Medieval ampulla
Description
English: Lower part of a Medieval lead ampulla, on one face a scallop-shell motif of Spencer 1971 Type II, and on the other a round-based vessel filled with oblique grooves within an outer frame of oblique lines. The scallop shell is a general symbol of pilgrimage and the vessel is the phial or flask of Holy Milk of the Virgin kept on the high altar of Walsingham Priory church. Width 32mm. 14th - early 16th century.
