Title
Medieval ampulla (plan).
Description
English: The object is a cast lead alloy ampulla. The ampulla is a sub semi-circle in plan, with a rounded base and broken upper edge. Both faces of the ampulla are decorated. One face is decorated with a crown surmounting an annulet with a branch or pine tree-looking design. Around this design there are fine oblique ridges in the field. The reverse face has a simplistic 6-petalled flower. The upper edge of the ampulla is abraded and broken. Originally it may have been ripped. The surface of the ampulla has developed a light cream coloured patina. The length of the ampulla from the upper edge to the apex of the base is 27.81mm, the maximum width across the lower portion is 31.25mm, and the thickness of the base of the ampulla is 5.51mm. It weighs 18.3g. Ampullae were used as a flask to hold holy water, becoming a souvenir of a pilgrimage; they date to the late 12th to 15th centuries (Spencer, B. 1990, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum p, 57 ff).
