Title
Medieval barrel-shaped link, or swivel
Description
English: CURATOR'S REPORT

A 13th - 15th Century silver barrel-shaped link.

Description

A Medieval silver barrel-shaped link, or swivel, probably from a chain. The link is formed from a central cylinder-shaped section, apparently composed of four discs, held in place on either side by raised supports. There is a surviving loop at one end, formed from a chamfered trefoil; the corresponding loop at the other end has broken off. The link may have been intended to represent the form of a barrel padlock, and may have swivelled or turned, although whether it was in fact able to be opened is unknown, as the components are now fused.

The find therefore qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
