Title |
Medieval buckle: Single looped buckle |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper alloy D-shaped buckle, with expanded outer frame, dating to the medieval period c. AD 1250-1400. The buckle is small and has a recessed bar for the pin, which is intact and made from copper alloy. Interestingly this buckle has a design on the outer frame. Some buckles of this type display punched dot decoration of geometric patterns, but this example has moulded decoration consisting of three figures, each with a stick or pole between them and grasped by each, apparently in some kind of dance. The figures have long hair (suggesting women?) or are wearing flowing head-dresses. The remains of gilding can be seen around the figures. This is the first example with the decoration that the author has come across, and a search of the usual literature and this database has not revealed any parallels. Maybe the small size of the buckle, and the theme of decoration, indicates that it was made for children. The search for parallels continues. |
