Medieval buckle |

Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy D shaped medieval single loop buckle, with buckle plate attached, dating to 1350-1400. The pin is missing. The loop of the buckle projects out in an arch shape from the pin bar, which is recessed. The outer loop has moulded decoration projecting out from the centre, with triangular projections at each end with a raised line bordering the inside. In the centre of the outer loop are three notches running accross, potentially for the now missing pin to rest in. The inside of the loop is bevelled. The buckle plate is formed of a rectangular sheet of copper alloy that wraps around the the pin bar. There are two circular rivet holes with copper alloy rivets still in situ in each outer corner of the plate, one of which is worn and broken. In between these is a larger circular rivet, which is surrounded by some yellow staining, suggesting that the rivet was originally iron. This is now worn and broken. The hole on the reverse where this rivet would have originally attached is worn and broken, and the plate is smaller. The surface of the buckle plate is very worn. It has a dark green patina which has come away in some places, leaving a light green patina underneath. There are possible small patches of silvering. The buckle measures 48.1mm in length, 26.1mm in width, and weighs 7.74g.
A similar buckle can be seen in Egan and Pritchard 1991, page 74, number 299. |
