Title |
Medieval buckle with integral 'box' plate |
||
Description |
English: A damaged and incomplete medieval buckle with integral hollow box plate cast in copper alloy (15th century AD). The frame is almost entirely missing apart from a very small part of the side at the junction. At the junction of frame and plate is an oval perforation. Retained in place is a long wire pin of circular cross-section, its tip bent to one side. It has corroded to a more red colour than the box plate and was of a different alloy. A thin, waisted element connects the frame and the trapezoidal plate. The box plate is hollow to accommodate the strap which was held in place by a pair of rivets at the attachment end (now missing). On its upper surface the plate is decorated with crude incised lettering, possibly the 'IhS' monogram within a border. The length of the pin suggests an elongated frame, possibly lyre shaped, such as on buckles illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 37-38; refs. 218, 219). The plate has a dark-grey colour with patches of light-green corrosion product and evidence of tinning on the upper surface. It measures 35.1mm long by 27.3mm wide by 6.6mm thick; it weighs 23.2g. |
