Title |
Medieval coin: Irish penny of Edward I |
||
Description |
English: An Irish silver penny of Edward I; Second Coinage, possibly Class IVc (see Seaby 1970: 29), minted c. 1297-1302. An interesting feature of this coin is that it has been deliberately bent twice, creating the elongated 'S-shaped' profile which is typical of so-called 'love tokens'. Love tokens made from Medieval coins are rare and it is suggested that this coin may have been several hundred years old when it was adapted. The surfaces of the coin are worn in places. It measures 18.1mm in diameter, 0.3mm thick and weighs 1.3g. |
