Description |
English: Rickerby (Stanwix) hoard Treasure report
I have examined seven coins as reported from the Stanwix parish to the west of Carlisle. The coins are of good English silver and therefore will have a silver content of 92.5% i.e the sterling standard. These coins form part of the original Rickerby hoard found in 1986/7, which contained 2,267 coins and dating to the early 1350s. While the recently discovered coins do not change the original interpretation they do bring the total number of coins in the hoard to 2,274. The condition of the seven coins is consistent with the surviving coins in Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. List of coins Item No. H4, Edward I penny class 3d (1280), Lincoln mint, 1.40g Item No. H1, Edward I penny class 8b (c.1294-99) thick drapery, London mint, 1.20g Item No. H3, Edward I penny class 10cf1 (1305-06), Durham mint under Bishop Bek (cross moline IM), 1.10g Item No. H5, Edward I penny class 10cf1, London mint, 1.20g Item No.H6, Edward I penny class 10cf1, London mint, 1.20g Item No. H7, Edward I penny class 10cf2a (1306-07), Bury St Edmunds mint, 1.20g Item No. H2, Edward I penny class 10cf2a, Canterbury mint, 1.40g These coins are all of a similar date and would have been in circulation together at the time of the hoards deposition. It is in my opinion therefore that these coins form a single group and fulfil the criteria of the 1996 Treasure act. Carl Savage BSc MA FSA Scot PCIfA |
