Title |
Medieval copper alloy buckle |
||
Description |
English: A medieval copper alloy buckle plate. The plate is flat, rectangular and has two incomplete stubs projecting from the left side that would have secured the buckle frame. In either corner on the right side is a copper alloy rivet. The surface of the plate is decorated with an enamelled abstract human face, shown close-up, and facing slightly towards the left. The face is broad and has pointed oval eyes. The skin is shown by white enamel, the eyes with blue enamel, and the lips with red. Below the face is a long rectangular strip of blue enamel presumably representing a piece of clothing. Another strip of green or yellow/brown enamel presumably representing a headband or hat runs across the forehead. A short diagonal strip of red enamel is located on either side of the head, perhaps representing more fabric or a hair pin. The fields surrounding the cells are filled with green enamel.
The face presumably represents a saint. |
