Title
Medieval finger-ring with noinscription (detail)
Description
English: A gold late-medieval iconographic finger ring dating to c.1400-c.1550. The ring was discovered with a smaller one (DENO-5082A6) inside it, held in place by the soil. The ring measures 20.5mm in diameter and 5.5mm thick. It weighs 2.52g.

The larger ring is an iconographic finger ring, with a rectangular bezel, triangular shoulders and seven small rectangular panels forming the hoop. The outer surface of the panels, the shoulders and the bezel of the ring are angled so that overall the ring is in the shape of a decagon. The inner surface, however, is circular. Each panel is bevelled towards each edge so that the top of each panel is oval in shape. The bezel is engraved with a depiction of St Christopher carrying Jesus as a child on his back, inspired by the legend that he carried Jesus across a swollen river. Each of the oval panels is engraved with a stylised lower-case black-letter initial, which combined read loyalte. Each letter is embellished with one or two leaves.
