Description
English: A copper-alloy horse harness pendant of Medieval date.

The lozengiform pendant bears the following heraldic device: 'azure a cross patonce between five martlets to dexter Or' (five birds set around a cross with trefid ends on a blue enamel field). Much of the enamel and gilding is missing. The hanger extends upwards from the top point and is slightly bent.

The artefact measures approximately 40mm high, 30mm wide (dimensions from photograph) and weighs 11.04g.

Ashley (2002: 22, no. 217) illustrates a similar example, from Norfolk, which he identifies as the imaginary arms of (Saint) Edward the Confessor. A similar pendant is recorded on the PAS database - see DOR-0CE755 - which varies slightly in that the martlets face to sinister. The suggested date for this pendant is 14th century.
