Title |
Medieval harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy shield shaped pendant and pendant suspension mount. The pendant has a square top and pointed base. The ground is striped horizontally alternately blue enamel and metal which would probably have been silvered. There are eight recessed cells for enamel in the shape of martlets round the edge. traces of red enamel survive in them. These are the arms of the de Valence family. They were Earls of Pembroke and owned much of the Welsh Marches. This corresponds with the findspot of near Conway. The pendant is still attached to a pendant suspension mount. It is in the form of a horizontal bar, the front bevelled, with a double hinge lug projecting down in the centre. At each end of the bar is a circular terminal with a rivet hole in the centre, and an elongated knop projecting opposite the bar. The rivets do not survive. There are traces of gilding on the front of the mount. |
