Medieval lead alloy papal bulla
Description
English: Medieval lead alloy papal bulla of Alexander III, 1159-81, 35mm in diamter and 4mm thick. The object is in fair condition with a grey patina and weighs 38.81grams. The object is circular in form with a rectangular section. The upper surface has a small concave area and the bottom is flattened, this is where the chord attaching it to the papal bull would have emerged. The obverse shows portraits of Sts Peter and Paul with the inscription SPASPE (abbreviations of their names). The reverse has a raised dotted border and is inscribed ALEX/ANDER/PPIII.
