Title
Medieval lead die (2 face)
Description
English: Cast cubical lead die, square in plan, profile and section with impressed annulets or ring and dot motifs in groups of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 on different sides: 1 is opposite 2, 3 is opposite 4, and 5 is opposite 6, which, according to Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, page 2949, is the Medieval system, used from the 13th to the 16th century, rather than the Roman system.

The arrangements are not all linear, but more haphazard, like Medieval examples in bone, as in Margeson (1993) page 216, Fig.164, No.1770, which is dated to c.1400-1550, or in chalk, as in Ottaway & Rogers (2002) page 2950, Fig.1518, No.14760, which is dated to the 14th century.

Biggs & Withers (2000) illustrate a similar lead die, in its dimensions, on page 67, No.275, but it is identified as a gaming counter.
