Title
Medieval or Post Medieval Chape
Description
English: Incomplete Medieval or Post Medieval copper alloy sheet chape. The chape is oval in cross section, possibly squashed and formed of a single sheet of copper alloy, over lapping at one side. The point is complete with part of the attachment end lost to old breaks. The point is formed of a folded tag (Egan and Pritchard 1991:282). Part of the attachment end at the top of the seam may be complete and appears plain with straight sides. It is large for a lace but probably too narrow for a scabbard unless it was for a specialist knife such as a stiletto. There appears to be a known class of large chapes with rivets whose use is currently unclear (Geake 2001:41). It is 35.8mm long, 12.8 by 6.6mm across and weighs 3.75g including the mud contents. Egan and Pritchard (1991:281-282) found in London the first evidence of lace or strap chapes was from the mid 13th century and they continued in use into the Post Medieval period.
