Title
Medieval oval framed single loop buckle (front and back views)
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy oval framed single loop buckle a narrowed bar and remains of gilding, dating from the Medieval period, between AD 1350 - 1400 (length: 17.5mm; width: 25.5mm; thickness: 5mm; weight: 4.0g).

The buckle frame is oval shaped in plan and rectangular in side section. The frame has a thicker rectangular area in the middle where there is a visible notch for the cast copper alloy pin, which also remains. The pin is wound around the narrowed strap bar (length of pin: 15mm; width of pin: 3.5mm) and protruded outwards to the outside edge of the buckle frame where it rests in the notch. There are small area of gilding remaining on the front side of the buckle frame, particularly on the thicker outside edge, at the end of the strap bar and partially on the pin. Overall, the buckle is in a worn and corroded condition with a patchy dark green/ brown patina.

An identical example is illustrated in Egan, G & Pritchard, F, 2002 edition, 'Medieval Finds from Excavations in London: 3: Dress Accessories c.1150 - c.1450', pages 68 & 70, fig 42, ref no 277. Egan & Pritchard suggest that 'the thickening on the bar may have been intended to suggest stronger support for the pin' (page 68).
