Title
Medieval papal bulla of Urban V
Description
English: A complete cast lead Papal Bulla of Pope Urban V (1362-1370). The reverse bears the legend URB/ANUS/PPV, spaced across three lines and positioned within a circular border of pellets. This states the name of the Pope, his abbreviated title, and his ordinal number. The PP (his abbreviated title) stands for 'pastor pastorum', which translates as 'shepherd of the shepherds'. The obverse, which is fairly worn and slightly pitted, is adorned with the traditional image of St Paul and St Peter. They are identified by the inscription SPA SPE, located above depictions of them. These are abbreviations of their names respectively. St Paul, on the left and looking right, is portrayed as having straight swept-back hair. His beard has been obscured by a blemish, but, judging from similar Bullas, would probably have been long and pointed. On the right, St Peter's hair and beard are formed by pellets. He is facing left and has a rounded face. There is a crozier between the apostles and tear-drop formations of linear beads separately surround them. The latter could perhaps represent haloes. The obverse design is contained within a circular beaded border, and the motifs on both sides are in relief. The Bulla is sub-circular in shape and has a brownish grey-buff patina overall. It weighs 46.8g, is 38.36mm in diameter and 5.30mm thick. There are two small notches almost perpendicular to both of the designs. These would have served as the attachment points for the cord running through the seal, which was necessary to fix it to a document. The vertical hole has, however, now closed up. The Bulla is not flat, and its forceful removal from a manuscript may account for the slightly undulating surfaces. This Bulla and others like it would have been used as an official seal by the curia to stamp and authenticate Papal documents.
