Title
Medieval pilgrim's souvenir: Ampulla
Description
English: A lead alloy pilgrim's ampulla dating from the 14th to 15th century (c. AD 1350-1500). The ampulla is flask shaped with a rounded lower half and two side lugs on the neck for suspension. The obverse of the ampulla depicts a four-pointed petal with hatched central midribs and a central pellet. Four more leaves are located in the interstices. The reverse depicts a crown with one middle and two side projections. The lining of the crown is hatched. The crown motif is the accepted symbol of the Virgin as the Queen of Heaven and it appears on many ampullae of the period. Examples of the crown motif have been found on ampullae in Newington (Kent), Abingdon (Oxon), Salisbury (Wilts) and Bradwell moated manor (Milton Keynes, Bucks) among others (Spencer 1990:60). For similar examples see Spencer 1990 p60-61 & figs. 180-183.
