English: A lead alloy pilgrim souvenir, probably a badge or a pendant of Medieval date, dating from about AD 1150 - 1550. The badge is incomplete but appears to have been circular with a projecting seing or attachment loop at the top. It has the remains of a beaded border and the centre is decorated with a forward facing human face or head. The figure has a beard, but no mitre or crown, and may represent Christ or a saint or apostle. The sides and base of the souvenir are missing. On the reverse is a central rib. The badge measures 26.4mm long, 13.9mm wide and 2.2mm thick. 2.75g.

The face is similar in style to those on vernicles or Veronica badges on page 250 of Spencer, 1998. Another badge on the same page is of St John Lateran, Rome. It is lozenge shaped (which is just possible for this example) and has projecting attachment loops as well as hair and a face very like this example. St John the Baptist is also depicted on badges from Ameins as a forward facing head on a plate, which is another possibility for this example, though it does not look particuly similar to the examples on page 217 on Spencer (ibid). Spencer notes that badges manufactured in England are more frequently openwork, whereas Scottish and continental badges have a tendancy to be solid, like this example.
