Title
Medieval seal impression
Description
English: Cast lead seal matrix of medieval date (1200-1400 AD). The seal matrix is flat and circular with a small integral cast loop on the reverse. It measures 26mm in diameter, and is 5.2mm thick. It weighs 19.83g.

The front of the matrix is engraved with a cross with two sub-triangular wedges below and two lozenges above the horizontal band. These were probably originally four nails arranged radially around the cross and may relate to the owner's name.

This design is enclosed by an incised circular line which separates the design from the inscription. Around the edge of the die, outside the border is an inscription. The inscription reads (initial: fleur-de-lis) S' RICI LE NEYLVR (seal of Richard the Nailer, or Richard Naylor). The reverse of the matrix has a small cast arrow design at the base that points up towards the cast loop. The loop at the top is complete and is D-shaped in profile.

The matrix is of a light-mid brown grey colour with an even patina, and has been rolled and abraded in the ploughsoil.
