Title
Medieval seal matrix, reversed
Description
English: Cast copper alloy seal matrix from the Medieval period, dating c.1300-1400. It is a conical example and the handle would have ended in an attachment loop. It is incomplete, the handle having broken off leaving only 8mm of it before the base. The edges of the seal have been broken but the circular die is mostly complete. The central design is of a quadruped in profile looking right (on the impression) with a round head and bushy tail, perhaps an ape or monkey. The legend is set between two lines. It is not completely clear due to wear and corrosion, but appears to read * IE SV D--EGISE (I am disguised). There is a large gap between the D and the E which may contain a lightly engraved letter or two.

Compare KENT-E8D631 and SF-1BC845, etc.
