Title |
Medieval seal matrix (reverse image) |
||
Description |
English: A flat, pointed-oval lead seal matrix dating to the medieval period (c. AD 1200-1300).
On the die (the engraved face), the central design depicts an elongated, upside down fleur-de-lis, or possibly a sword/dagger pointing downwards away from the cross initial mark. There is a continuous plain groove border separating the central design from the inscription. The inscription reads: + S・ROGERI・[F]IL hENRICI・(sigillum Rogeri filius Henrici, or 'seal of Roger, son of Henry'). On the reverse of the seal matrix are the remains of a pierced lug. Though the reverse is very worn, it is possible that the motif from the die has been cast below the pierced lug, with similar curved petals/guard and raised central rib pointing downwards towards the bottom point of the matrix. |
