Medieval seal matrix impression.
Description
English: An impersonal Medieval seal matrix. The matrix is a pyramid type, made from cast copper alloy which has then been engraved. In plan the matrix base is circular. The reverse of the matrix has a hexagonal sectioned stem which terminates with lozenge shaped lug with a circular perforation at the centre. The base of the matrix has a border of fine oblique grooves, similar to feathering. Within this border there is, in a row, a; branch, y and cruciform cross. The matrix measures 27.5mm long, and 16.86mm diameter. It weighs 9.1g. The surface of the matrix has a well developed dark green. The seal matrix dates to the Medieval period. It is after c. 1300 smaller impersonal circular based seal matrices are most common (Harvey, P.D.A. and McGuinness, A. 1996 A Guide to British Medieval Seals British Library and Public Record Office, p. 88-89). Matrices with a single letter and branches become more frequent in the 15th century (ibid p. 93).
