Title
Medieval seal matrix set with Roman intaglio
Description
English: A medieval gilded silver seal matrix, of oval form, set with an antique Roman intaglio gem. The border bears an inscription in Lombardic lettering. There have been several suggested readings: +. VIVE. VALE [LE?]W . TIME ('Live, be well/farewell, ... fear'?) or +•VIVE•VALE DEV'•TIME, or +. VIVE. VALENSV'. TIME (Live, be strong, fear). The gilding is slightly worn, notably around the edge. The Roman gemstone is a finely-engraved oval carnelian, with a bevelled edge and lightly convex front face, and depicts a pair of cornucopiae flanking a date palm, with obliquely grooved trunk and two bunches of fruit hanging beneath five obliquely grooved fronds.

The reverse of the matrix is deeply bevelled to accommodate the gem. From the image, there appears to be a good deal of surviving gilding, worn off in places, particularly around the edge and down the long axis. There is an ungilded band across the short axis, which may be an applied piece of silver; this appears to have a pair of breaks in the centre, perhaps from a suspension loop or handle.
