Title
Medieval signet finger-ring (incomplete)
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy signet finger-ring of late Medieval date. Signet rings and seal matrices bearing single letters are relatively common finds. There are numerous such rings in the British Museum collection (cf. Dalton 1912: no. 360) and a close parallel for this piece was also found in excavations in Salisbury (see Cherry in Saunders and Saunders eds. 1991: 42, no. 17). The suggested date is 15th century.

The bezel is sub-oval in plan and bears a central capital letter ‘I’ between two vertical leafy sprays. The letter, the ornamentation and the surrounding octagonal line border are all in negative relief. The shoulders taper into the incomplete hoop, which is of D-shaped section.

The artefact has a dark green patina. It measures 25.3mm wide, 23.7mm deep (bezel to back of hoop) and 12.3mm high at the bezel. The weight is 8.77g.
