Title |
Medieval spur buckle, reverse |
||
Description |
English: A worn and incomplete medieval cast copper-alloy spur buckle with decorative integral plate. Plain oval frame with a pointed lip and pin recess. In section the frame is triangular with rounded corners; the reverse and inner faces are flat and perpendicular to each other. There is an off-centre circular perforation in the plate which would have held the pin; the pin is now missing. There is a second, smaller circular perforation further along the plate. Beyond the perforation there are a pair of transverse protrusions after which the plate narrows to a width of 5.1mm. The plate seems to have been broken after c. 7mm following old damage at this narrow point. Buckles with integral plates of this size are thought to have acted as spur buckles. Such buckles, for example those illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 33-34), are dated to the second half of the 13th and the 14th centuries. |
