Medieval spur buckle. Drawing: Frank Basford |

Description |
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy oval framed buckle with an integral plate of Medieval date. The pin is missing. Length 44mm, width of oval frame 17.5mm and 1.5mm thick. Weight 4.08g. The oval frame has a pronounced swelling at the outside edge which is low D-shaped in cross-section, flat on the underside. At each junction between the frame and plate is a small protruding knop. The trapezoidal flat plate, which has two centrally placed holes, (one for a pin and the other for a rivet which is now missing) narrows towards the attachment end where it evolves into a sub-square shape. Two oblique decorative grooves on the sub-square part of the plate converge towards the attachment end. At each side of these grooves, near the outer edge of the plate, is another groove of smaller size. The attachment end terminates with a narrow 'hook', low D-shaped in cross-section, flat on its inner side. A dome-headed rivet, sub-square in cross-section, perforates the centre of the sub-square area and also the extreme end of the 'hook' where the rivet is burred over. Tiny traces of gilding survive on the front of the plate in the vicinity of the dome-headed rivet. |
