Title |
Medieval spur buckle |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy medieval buckle probably from a spur. The buckle is 55.2mm long, 15.6mm wide and 5mm thick. It has an oval frame and an integral plate which contains a hole through which the pin was secured, and two rivet holes, one at each end. The end opposite the loop terminates in a forward projecting hook. The plate tapers from the loop to the hook but has a rectangular wider area round the rivet hole at the hook end. There is a slight collar which projects on each side of the pin hole. The pin and the rivets are missing. There are signs of stress in the centre of the plate where the metal has become bent. The buckle probably had a curved profile originally and has become flattened. Similar buckles are discussed on page 78 of Egan and Pritchard (1991) “Dress Accessories”. It probably dates from the thirteenth or fourteenth century. |
