Title
Medieval spur buckle
Description
English: A copper alloy Medieval buckle dating from the early 13th century onwards. The buckle has an integral plate and is probably a spur buckle. It is an oval frame with an expanded outer edge, with a knop at each corner. A hole in the plate houses the copper alloy pin which is looped round. The plate is long and thin with a expanded are near the frame decorated with a transverse ridge. A copper alloy rivet passes through the centre of the expanded area. There is a bulbous collar in the centre of the plate, and a fleur-de-lis terminal which also has a copper alloy rivet through it. The plate is bent. Compare Meols number 769. This object was found near Towton Battlefield, so it may date from 1461.
