Title
Medieval spur buckle
Description
English: Large cast copper alloy spur buckle. The frame is rectangular (L. 30.05mm. W. 14.2mm). There is a substantial rectangular groove in the centre of the outer edge which serves as a pin rest. Opposite this there is a gap in the frame where the pin protrudes from the plate. The frame is rectangular in section. The plate has a sub-rectangular and a sub-circular element, both rectangular in section. The plate is joined to the frame either side of the gap which extends into the sub-rectangular part (L. 11.5mm. Maximum W. 9.2mm) of the plate forming a rectangular slot in which the pin rests. The plate thickens where a rivet passes through the plate and pin at the end of the rectangular slot securing the pin in place. A slightly pointed sub-circular loop forms the other end of the plate (D. 10.5mm). A moulded, transverse ridge separates the rectangular and circular parts of the plate. The cast copper alloy pin is intact (L. 21.4mm), and also thickens where the rivet passes through it. The pin is flush with the plate, then thickens at the top where it reaches the frame, so that it protrudes above the it. It then narrows underneath, creating a ‘step’, allowing it to rest in the groove. The reverse is flat. Patchy dull green patina.
