Title
Medieval to Post-Medieval Candlestick
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy candlestick of Late Medieval to Post- Medieval date (c. AD 1475 – c. AD 1600). Length: 122.7mm; maximum diameter: 21.9mm; weight: 88.27g.

The socket has a diameter of 21.9nmm, a length of about 31.5mm and the overall depth of the hollow inside is 41.0mm. The mouth of the socket tapers inwards slightly near the top to form a sharp rim. Mid-way along the length of the socket there is a low circumferential rib. The solid stem has a length of 79.0mm and about mid-way along its length there is a pronounced collar. Above the collar the diameter of the stem is 13.0mm and the diameter of the lower part, below the stem, is 11.9mm. At the bottom the stem flares to a diameter of 19.2mm where there is a flat flange and integral hollow ‘plug’ that fitted into a basal drip-tray. This flaring part of the stem is hollow for a depth of 22.3mm. The ‘plug’ has an old break.

This candlestick has a shiny dark green patina overall.

A candlestick of similar design is illustrated by Brownsword and dated late fifteenth/sixteenth centuries (Brownsword 1985, ‘English Latten Domestic Candlesticks 1400-1700’. no. 7).

Similar candlesticks or candle holders are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example, see find from Totton and Eling Parish: HAMP-1E54A4.
