Title
Medieval to Post-Medieval Spur Buckle
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy spur buckle with integral plate of late Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is D-shaped in section with flat back and rounde front face, and has a D-shaped frame with expanded outer edge. Two transverse collars separate the frame from the plate. These gradually decrease in size and both have central circular perforations, the one closest to the frame containing corroded iron that probably represents the remains of the pin. The plate itself is triangular in form, tapering to an elaborate decorative terminal end. Mid way along the plate is a third transverse rib, which also has a circular rivet hole at its centre. The terminal is leaf or palm shaped with pairs of moulded and opposing diagonal ridges at top and bottom, a lozenge shaped pointed tip with central ridge, and two large circular perforations at the top. A third rivet hole is visible at the centre of the terminal. The front face of the buckle has traces of gilding on all surfaces, but is quite worn and in places, notably the frame, has traces of corrosive products. This buckle measures 54.67mm in length, 15.90mm in width, 3.93mm in thickness, and weighs 6.96g. Similar buckle frames with integral plates are noted from Medieval London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: nos. 320-321) with suggested usage as spur buckles. These are dated as early as the 13th centruy AD, however the form and decoration on the current example might suggest a slightly later Medieval to early Post-Medieval date in the 15th or 16th centuries AD.
