Title
Medieval to Post Medieval tobacco jar lid
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy vessel lid or stopper from a tobacco jar dating from the late Medieval to early Post Medieval period, circa AD1600-1850. In plan, the top of the lid had a flower head design with a central knop surrounded by 8 petals. The lid is damaged and it is likely that there were originally 9 petals. The petals are defined by a shallow groove and the end of each petal is slightly rounded. The edge of the flower lid was probably originally sub-lozenge shape in form. The reverse of the lid is plain and is now contorted although it was probably originally flat. At the centre of the reverse is an integrally cast shank. The shank is sub circular in section with the sides flaring out at the terminus. There is a round knop on the end of the shank. The surfaces are worn but patches of black, shiny lacquer survives on some of the flower petals. The rest of the object has an uneven grey / green patina. The lid is damaged with 1 petal missing due to old breaks. One of the petals is contorted.

The length of the lid is 19.42mm. The width of the lid is 14.65mm. The height of the object is 16.46mm. Weight 6.9g.

A comparable tobacco lid is recorded under reference IOW-691431
