Title |
Medieval to post-Medieval candle holder (fragment) |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy candle holder of probable late 15th early 16th century date. The form of this piece suggests that it originated from a branched double-socket type candle holder (see Brownsword 1985: 1/3, figs. 3 and 4).
Only the socket survives. It is cylindrical and tapers towards the bottom, where there is a short projection of circular section. The top edge of the socket angles inwards slightly and below this is a parallel ridge above a groove. Halfway down the socket is a second groove and there is a third at the base. The angled lower portion also has a slight 'step' in the surface. The artefact has a greyish-green patina. It measures 42.4mm long, 22.1mm in diameter and weighs 32.32g. |
