| Description | Class 101 DMUs were one of the mainstays of the rural branch lines in East Anglia for many years, and for most of my childhood. Here, two units are seen in Platform 6 at Norwich station. Unit 107, was, I think, a three car set. The aerial on the front of the unit was part of the equipment needed for the RETB (Radio Electronic Tokenless Block) signalling system then in use on the East Suffolk Line, and from memory, only the three car units were fitted with this equipment. These units were also fitted with a powerful headlight - which at that time was not standard, and as i recall, not carried by the 2 car units based at Norwich Crown Point Depot. BR Blue and Grey and the Class 101s would eventually give way to sprinterisation and then privatisation, and the multitude of liveries we now have in the UK. Norwich Cathedral can be seen in the background. |
