Summary[edit]

Description

The Reduviidae (i.e., assassin bugs), large cosmopolitan family, almost all are terrestrial ambush predators, about 7000 species have been described They are stalking, predatory insects that can be collected on palm fronds, cliffs, spider webbing, or near lights at night (many can be collected by blacklight). Adult insects range from about 4.0 to 40 mm, depending on the species. They most commonly have an elongated head with a distinct narrowed 'neck', long legs, and prominent, segmented, tubular mouthparts, most commonly called the proboscis, but some authors use the term "rostrum". Many species can deliver a painful stab with the proboscis, injecting venom or digestive juices. They feed mainly on insects, some tropical species feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals and human and (represent a transition from predators to parasites). The Emesinae, or thread-legged bugs , are conspicuously different from the other reduviids by their very slender body form. They walk on their mid and hind legs; the front pair is raptorial.
