Title
microcore (profile)
Description
English: A chert single-platform micro-core, oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. The pebble was initially broken in half by a single blow, the point of percussion of which is visible at the left margin of the resulting striking platform. The bulbar scar can be seen originating from this point although the remainder of the surface of the striking platform is very irregular and featureless. Subsequently around eight thin flakes were removed from the edge of the platform, the scars of which can clearly be seen around about three-fifths of the circumference of the artefact. The cortex of the pebble has been left on the remaining two-fifths. The surface of the chert has been made coarse through weathering and is mottled grey to brown in colour. The cortex has patches of pale brown and grey and its pitted surface indicates that it is derived from a local beach pebble.

Bond (2004) illustrates a similar single-platform microblade core on page 113, fig.5.97, no.L21, which is dated from the later Mesolithic period.

Butler (2005) illustrates a similar single-platform bladelet core on page 85, fig.30, no.8, which is dated from the Mesolithic period.
