Title |
Middle Saxon lead weight |
||
Description |
English: A possible Middle Saxon lead weight. The object is circular in plan, measuring 16mm in diameter and 3mm in thickness. It is decorated on both sides. The 'obverse' bears a motif somewhat resembling the inverse impression of a porcupine sceatta. Approximately half of the perimeter to one side filled with a series of diagonal lines, resembling the hair or spines seen on Series E sceattas. In the centre is a pointed oval field, in which segments of what might be an animal or a mask are visible. These comprise a pellet with a roughly T-shaped panel below; to either side of the horizontal bar of the T-shaped panel is a wedge-shaped motif. The finder has suggested that this motif may resemble a moneyer facing right, striking a coin on an anvil. The 'reverse' is decorated with four circular indentations, arranged to form a square.
The object weights 4.63g, approximately four-times the weight of a standard Series E sceatta. The dots on the reverse may, therefore, indicate a value of four sceattas. Another lead weight has been found on this site (PAS ref. LIN-DB96D2). This item is rectangular with neatly cut sides. One side is decorated with two circular indentations, similar to those seen on the present item. Curiously, LIN-DB96D2 has a mass of 2.42g, equating to approximately two Series E sceattas. |
