Between 24 and 29 July 2017, I noticed a population of this hornet-mimic hoverfly in a narrow forested stream gorge within the Dourdon river basin (Le Collet-de-Dèze, Lozère). Individuals were either seen drinking on the stream edge (2 x), feeding nectar or pollen on flowers (Buddleja davidii, Eupatorium cannabinum, Rubus sp.) along a forest path ca. 50 meters above the stream (3 x) or feeding on undetermined garden shrubs (2 x), ca. 50 meters away from the forest edge. Both males and females were observed several times. On one occasion, two individuals (m + f) were noticed feeding on the same shrubs, all other observations covered single individuals. Compared to other large hoverflies, M. crabroniformis seem to be rather shy and difficult to approach, pictures were thus taken with a 300 mm MFT lens. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA |
