English: The U.S. flag is presented to Marilyn Stanton following the funeral service for Stanton’s uncle, U.S. Army Cpl. Gordon D. McCarthy, in Section 18 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., Dec. 14, 2023.
McCarthy was a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division when his unit was attacked by enemy forces near the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea. After the engagement, his remains could not be recovered, and he was reported missing in action on Dec. 2, 1950. On July 27, 2018, following a summit held between U.S. and North Korea leaders, North Korea returned over 55 boxes which were purported to contain remains of American service members killed during the Korean War. These boxes were sent to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA)’s laboratory in Hawaii for identification. To identify McCarthy’s remains, DPAA scientists used anthropological analysis, as well as circumstantial evidence. This was supported by mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome analysis from Armed Forces Medical Examiner System scientists. McCarthy was official accounted for on Feb. 13, 2023.
