Durante perto de cem anos, as ricas jazidas de pirites de São Domingos, 20 km a leste da vila alentejana de Mértola, foram exploradas em larga escala, Nasceu em torno do complexo mineiro uma aldeia de grandes dimensões com o bairro operário, o hospital, a escola, as casas dos engenheiros, etc. Com o abandono da mina no princípio dos anos 60 e a retirada da maior parte do material e equipamentos a povoação desertificou.
