Description |
English: A cluster of mature apple trees grows in a field in the distance, beyond a wooden fort guard tower to the right, grid pattern orchard to the left, and a field with perimeter wooden fence in the foreground. In the early 1960s, during the Mission 66 era in the park, an orchard was established northwest of the main entrance to the fort reconstruction. The location, tree spacing, and tree species were not historic. The location was chosen to provide a screen between the fort and the U.S. Army buildings to the north. Several types of fruits trees were planted including apples, cherries, and pears. The apple trees became diseased and were removed between 2003 and 2009. Only several cherry and pear trees remain from the Mission 66 orchard, visible in the distance between the reconstructed orchard to the left and the fort to the right. They have lost their grid pattern, no longer conveying the appearance of an orchard. *Subject: Cultural Landscapes
