Title
Modern Copy of a Charles I 'Sixpence'
Description
English: A complete Modern base metal and coated copy of a 'sixpence' of Charles I (1625-1649), 1900-2000.

This coin copies the silver shillings minted at Pontefract during 1648 and 1649, the so-called 'siege' pieces. Sixpences were never minted at Pontefract, but were at Scarborough in 1644-5 and Newark in 1646. However, these latter types are square or diamond-shaped in profile, not disc-shaped as in this case.

This copy seems to have been stamped and then cut out as a disc, as it has an edge on the reverse that stands slightly proud of the surface of the coin but has no edge on the obverse.

Obverse: DVM:SPIRO:SPERO(While I live, I hope); Crowned CR

Reverse: ·OBS· (obsessum)/·VI·; Representation of Pontefract Castle

Diameter: 20.5mm. Weight: 1.56g. DA=12:6.

A similar coin has been recorded from Cornwall: CORN-90E423.
