Title |
Modern pipe tamper |
||
Description |
English: A modern copper alloy pipe tamper dating to c AD 1780-1920. The pipe tamper depicts a bust on top of a pedestal. There is a nautical theme to the decoration on the pipe tamper and this suggests that the bust may depict Admiral Lord Nelson (before losing his eye and arm). The hairstyle with the hair brushed back from the forehead, rolls on either side of the head and a pigtail is typical of late eighteenth-early nineteenth century hairstyles. Round the neck there is a collar, this may be part of the stock or it may possibly be part of the high collar typically worn by Lord Nelson. Beneath the bust are crossed cannons on top of a pedestal. The pedestal has an anchor on the back and on the front there are either crossed, draped flags or entwined ropes. At the base of the pedestal is a circular tamper. The pipe tamper measures 62.9mm in height, 21.48mm in width and the base is 14mm in diameter. |
