Historically, the southern portion of the estate property was organized in a formal layout with the Federal-era mansion as the centerpiece of a cluster of buildings and gardens. The northern area was more informal. When the property transitioned to a public park in 1911, many of the organizing features of the estate landscape were incorporated into its design.
