Mormon Craftsmen Leave Legacies Along the Trail

Few of the hundreds of Mormon families leaving Nauvoo in the spring of 1846 were provided with all the supplies needed for their journey to the Rocky Mountains. As the "Camp of Israel" moved slowly across the southern part of Iowa, some companies stopped to work for settlers along the way, taking their pay in badly needed corn, fodder, pork, or other supplies.

While at the camp called Richardson's Point, in western Van Buren County; several companies were dispatched to clear land, cut rails, and husk corn. Some even built log cabins for settlers. Two of these cabins have survived through the years, one of which stands before you. Notice the craft with which the logs were hewn.

Through working such jobs, many of the Pioneers earned food and supplies for both themselves and their animals, thus making the continuation of their journey west possible.
