Devil's Claw

Most commonly called devil's claw, this desert hitchhiker is also called elephant tusks or unicorn plant. Each of these names refer to the seed pod. The flowers, reddish-purple to coppery yellow, are large enough to attract attention but are relatively few. With such large flowers these perennial species are generally pollinated by large carpenter and bumble bees. Young pods were often eaten by Native Americans as a vegetable. The black outer covering of the mature fruits was stripped off and used in basketry.
