Description

Inserido na área classificada em Dezembro de 1996 como Património Mundial da UNESCO, o Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar, ex-libris de Gaia, preserva a interessante igreja e o claustro, de planta circular, exemplar único em Portugal.

A Igreja, caracterizada pela sua forma circular, é uma réplica da Igreja de Santa Maria Redonda, em Roma, e é coberta por uma abóbada hemisférica. Foi construída em 1538 pelos mestres Diogo de Castilho e João de Ruão para os Cónegos Regrantes de Santo Agostinho. Levou 72 anos a concluir, devido à falta de verba dos cónegos e à situação política da altura - o reino de Portugal tinha sido tomado pela vizinha Espanha, tendo mesmo este local adoptado o nome de uma santa espanhola, a Nossa Senhora do Pilar.

Em 1832, durante o Cerco do Porto, foi reconhecido o valor militar do local e o convento foi transformado em fortaleza improvisada. No início do século XX, tornou-se Quartel das Tropas, estando actualmente sob a alçada do Regimento de Artilharia da Serra do Pilar.

No interior, são de salientar alguns retábulos de talha dourada, com colunas salomónicas, e as esculturas de madeira policromada, setecentistas, figurando Santa Eulália, Santa Apolónia e Santo Agostinho.
